How To Fall In Love With Your Career This Valentine's Day

It’s officially love season, and we’re exploring how to fall in love with your career. Whilst you can’t cosy up to a career on a cold night, it can be a hugely rewarding area of life that gives you purpose and fulfilment.

But for some, this can seem like an impossible pipe dream when facing the barriers of the workplace and the challenges of managing a disability or chronic illness.

At SIC, we want you to have more of a warm and bubbly feeling towards your career. So grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy these tips on how to fall in love with your career this Valentine’s Day.

Get stuck in a book

There’s really a book for everything. Start by pinpointing and listing the areas of your career you’re struggling the most with, or the topics you’re most interested in.

Then, head to SIC's Learning Hub where you can browse and shop our book recommendations.  Re-boot your career confidence with You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life in our Confidence and Mindset category. Or head to our Career Development section and plan a professional journey that's tailored to you with The Squiggly Career.

Books are great for feeling excited by a certain topic or area. When you're reading about how to build a fruitful career, you’ll naturally build momentum as you build enthusiasm, which will propel you in taking the actions toward a career you’re hopeful for. This Valentine’s Day, make a date with a book and inspire your career. Click here for 5 books to help you with your career.

Volunteer

Rewire your thoughts

You can take all the action in the world towards the career of your wildest dreams, but if limiting thoughts are present, then you're limiting yourself. This is not an instant job you can tick off your to-do list. It's a work in progress!

There are so many tools out there to explore, including talking therapy, hypnotherapy, holistic healing practices, listening to motivational audios, journaling, meditation, mantras, podcasts and books. You could start with this podcast from The School of Greatness with Dr. Caroline Leaf on managing the mind and stress.

If you’re struggling with your mental health right now, please know you’re never alone and there is help out there. If you need to speak to someone right now: Call 116 123 to talk to Samaritans, or email: jo@samaritans.org for a reply within 24 hours, or you can Text SHOUT to 85258 to contact the Shout Crisis Text Line or text YM if you’re under 19.

Look after yourself

Mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. This is by far the most important tip we could share. Make rest, healthy habits and things you love to do a prioritised part of your life.

Doesn’t sound like being proactive, right? Incorrect! Sometimes you need to slow down to speed up. This TED Talk by Shawn Achor is worth a watch, and guess what? The happy secret to better work lies in not focusing on work, but on happiness!

What does radical self-love look like for you? We all know this is more than a bubble bath (but maybe this is part of your self-love plan). Try writing a list of all the practices from your toolbox that help you. Refer back to this whenever you need inspiration for your next best step.

Whatever stage of your career you're at right now, you are your greatest asset. You can’t have a career without you. Knowing what rituals work to prioritise your wellbeing is extremely empowering, and so is knowing when to step back from obligations, in order to put you and your health first.

We would love to hear from you and give you support! Don’t forget to drop by our Learning Hub to check out the book and course recommendations, and if you don’t know where to start, sign up to our newsletter here for up to date links to sign up to our FREE monthly Career Clinic.
